Hurricanes, What do you know?

With climate change rearing its ugly head in the past decade, we have all been witness to some of the most catastrophic flood and hurricane hazards around the world. There is nothing deadlier then natural disasters, and especially hurricanes and floods. Perhaps the most memorable is Hurricane Katrina that pretty much wiped out New Orleans and portions of Louisiana. People are still trying to patch together homes from debris, and knocked down building materials. Some still do not have anywhere to go, let alone a place to call home. Many have lost loved ones, and their jobs.
The worst part is that it is not over. Every year we are faced with the disasters, and every year we have to try and recover with very little help from our governments. So it is really up to every individual to try and prepare themselves for a hurricane or flood. Not only by doing those average things like stockpiling food and water, but more advanced efforts to try and stop you and your family from becoming a victim. Here are a few words of advice to prepare you for the next hurricane or flood hazard.
First, make sure you have carefully read your insurance policy. Understand your coverage, and how it applies to your home and belongings. Make sure you are covered for hurricanes and floods. Make sure you know the differences between coverage for floods, storms, and high winds. You cannot wait until the storm is coming to get the insurance. Many companies will simply deny the plan. So start early, and do not take the risk of losing your home.
Second, make a plan for you and your family. Escape routes, local shelter, and bailing methods. Have someone shut off the electricity immediately, and begin to get rid of materials that have been damaged by mold or bacteria.
Third, make sure you have taken copies of everything. Keep all of your photographs, and important documents together in a flood safe case. Keep copies of your insurance policy, and your house deeds all together. These documents will make your life easier if you have them ready as soon as the devastation has calmed down.
Finally, the worst thing you could do is take the height of the storm for granted. Even if the weatherman has told you that it will be small, you have to think the worst. That way you will be prepared if it grows. Storms can change in minutes, and the weather channel may not be updated every minute. Do not let yourself get caught off guard.
